3rd trig today of 3 in awful wet windy weather. Used PROW's to get to access land that the trig is located on. Waved at the farmer in his tractor who was transporting food to his livestock. A random pole in the top where the spider once was!

Cap missing. Has had a recent coat of paint. Met farmer on quad bike, who was tolerant that I had walked down drive but reminded me that it was not a prow. He asked why pillar had been painted white - he went to market and on his return he noticed. Was happy it was not graffiti.

On way back from Hindhope Law we turned east on forest track toward Blackwool Law. The track is just before the disused quarry and goes all the way to the fence line and the open moorland, we then followed the fence across the rough moorland to the trig which is on a rocky outcrop. The trig is visible from the edge of the forest.

Followed A1mushroom directions parking at Blakehopeburn and follow the forestry tracks. This made a pleasant walk to the trig point. Just a short slog over grassy tussocks

My second visit, different route. Walked N from Gibsheil to join the Pennine Way until just before the old quarry, turning E along a track that becomes a rough and rather overgrown ride emerging from the forest about half a mile NW of the TP. It's a tough slog over horrible tussocks with hidden drainage ditches to the TP, best advice is to stick as close as possible to the fences.

Parked at the picnic site on the Forest Road near Blakehopeburnhaugh. Followed the forestry tracks to NY797986 where the track disappears into new saplings and gorse bushes. This can be negotiated easily to the fence line. The pasture / moorland is quite wet with a few deep holes in between the tussocks.

My 400th trig, delightful views as a reward. Ground dry and tussocky approaching from the west.

From Hindhope Law via forestry tracks to NY 7979 9775 then surprisingly dry fields to the pillar avoiding the cattle. Decent views for such a relatively low elevation.

Should be re-named not black wool but 'White Cotton' as the hillside was carpeted with flowering bog cotton, delightful. On approach up the Woolaw farm track was challenged by farm hand on a quad bike, but once he had the measure of us, that we weren't poaching or sheep rustling he was fine, thank you George. He did concede that with the bridges gone at either end of the footpath the only way on to it was via the private farmtrack; and that the land I asked to visit, the Settlement and the TRig Point, was Access Land. It was good to get permission though as I had the dog with me. The settlement is impressive, and the views from a relatively low hill are very good indeed.

Not as boggy as anticipated due to overnight frost keeping ground hard. Very interesting settlement en route. Saw 2 deer on the summit. Trig point has a wooden pole inserted in the spider hole.

FB at NY827982 washed away. Approached from north from Bellshiel bridge NY813994. Track leads to private bridge at NY813992, owners living at NY813989. probably best to ask permission, which in my case was granted. Alternative access would be via Pennine Way to west and a long walk round

Parked at Rochester planning to use the footbridge over the river there and then footpath to Woolaw. However footbridge no longer there so the footpath goes from nowhere to nowhere now. Instead used the farm track over the river just W of Woolaw (weren't challenged but not a PROW), then straight up the access land to the trig. Passed what is marked on the map as "settlement" and looks like a remarkably preserved prehistoric settlement. There are 4 roundhouses, the largest 7m diameter, with the bases of the walls and the doorways intact. The houses are surrounded by a substantial wall, with an attached stock enclosure and field boundary banks. Will research to see what's known about it. Trig itself has the usual huge Northumberland views. Later edit: here's full details of the Woolaw settlement, confirms it dates to Iron Age (200BC) http://www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk/understanding/historyarchaeology/historicvillageatlas/rochesterintroduction/rochesterhistory/rochesterromanosettlements

Overall approach from northwest. Visited in conjunction with neighbouring Hindhope Law. Parked beside toilet block at Blakehopeburnhaugh, NT786002 and followed forest tracks as shown on maps. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open, Allen screws reinstated. Flush bracket faces ESE, compass measurement 118°. Vented through sight hole on FB face. Open outlook in all directions although most of the surrounding hillscapes are on higher ground.
