Approached by road from south past Charterhouse church, probably worth a look another time, about quarter of a mile north east from there was a lane heading north west uphill, looked quite promising and there was a place to park at the top beside the radio mast. From there on foot heading west. Lost a little height on first section of track then onto moorland and uphill, pillar visible in the distance. Probably about a mile from where car was parked. Pleasant walk. Pillar sits on top of a raised mound about ten metres diameter. Great views all around. Cap missing. Memorial plaque on one side on another a commemorative plaque celebrating 50 years as an area of outstanding natural beauty and noting this place as the highest point on the Mendips. Called Beacon Batch. As I approached another walker moved on, not sure if they were also logging the TP.

Very popular pillar visited by a constant stream of walkers today. In good condition, and sat atop a wide mound of stones. Accessed from footpath up the road from the Burrington Ham car park, which was wide but muddy until it opened out onto the hill itself. Hill populated by ponies, unafraid of humans, but also completely disinterested. Views in all directions are absolutely spectacular.

Should have been an easy walk from the reservoir to the east. But the RoW turns into a stream when it rains, and it was impassable about 500m in. Fortunately there was a gap underneath the fence into the field to the north (commando scramble required) leading to a stile back onto the main RoW 100m west. When we reached the trig there were cows all around it, but it was so drizzly and misty that we just ignored each other. There are probably amazing views in good weather, but it was bleak, wet, and muddy today.

Gentle stroll really but interesting for the fact that you start on Triassic Dolomitic Conglomerate containing fragments of the underlying Carboniferous Limestone and Devonian Sandstone & Conglomerate. Walking up the bridle path you cross steeply bedded limestone until finally, just before the gate, you pass onto the Devonian sandstones. The pillar is located on a cairn of sandstones and allows for fantastic views all around. The Severn Estuary is obvious along with both bridges, Weston super Mare, Clevedon, the hills of south & central Wales, Quantocks, Exmoor & Dartmoor. The Cotwolds are visible too. An excellent top.

I am a bit ashamed of myself. I have lived on the doorstep of this peak all my life and I was almost 40 before I climbed it. The sun came out late one afternoon and I fancied a stroll so along with Dennis, my faithful four-legged companion and here is where we ended up. A bracing climb from Burrington Combe, through the gorse up to the pillar. I had a couple of nice chats with people on the way, a fellow walker and a considerate mountain biker. The pillar itself is in good nick, sitting atop a stone cairn like mound and the views today were fabulous. The sun shone and buzzards swooped above my head.I can't ask for more.

I would not recommend a walk up here in pouring rain and strong winds as I did. The views are not good when clouds descend. I would also recommend keeping to the paths so wet bracken doesn't fill your boots with water. When taking the bus back to Bristol, take some spare transport so that when the bus breaks down near Dundry, you don't have to wait two hours for a taxi. This could also help at Bristol Temple Meads when the train back to Southampton is an hour late because the police are on the train at Newport. A mad mad mad day. I'm almost put off trigpointing!
