Had several unsuccessful and frankly rather dangerous attempts from SE, E and NE, could not fight my way through the dense vegetation on the steep slippy slopes. Thought I was defeated until I tried from SW, perfectly easy and straightforward up gentle slopes of young bracken with nicely pruned path through blackthorn to pillar.

Parked in wide forestry track entrance opposite the road in to Woodland Cottage. Followed this road (Woodland Cottage)then along track, forest road, track to the prominent mound upon which the pillar sits. The last section of track was a definite welly boots task! Steep, slippy final ascent and thankfully I didn't need the saw I took along as the path through the blackthorn is still clear. Spider gone, FB clinging on. Otherwise pillar is o.k. Decent views. Most enjoyable wee ramble this with lots of frogs spawning and plenty bird life including a pair of Mistle thrush.

Along with Nosser, tried to get this one in 2013. Failed because of thorns. Along with secateurs, he managed early in 2014 but I only made it today. Well done everybody on their hard work pruning. Big difference in the thorns. Good scramble up followed by a good view.

Thanks to Aqueously90 who prepared the route for us on what sounds like a number of occasions, path takes you to within 50m and then it's a tricky ascent up mossy rocks and a slippy slope to find the wee cleared path to the trig amongst the very spiky bushes. As previously mentioned spider is missing. Great views and well worth the effort, grab it now whilst the path is still there!

Log #50! Fourth visit, the last two of which were spent prepping for today. If you approach the trig from the south-west, by zigzagging your way up to the top, you'll now see a path cut through the thorns directly to the trig. As others have said, you'll need to be careful, as the moss and mud is only loosely adhered to the rocks supporting it. The trig itself isn't in great condition: the spider has been completed chiseled out, and an attempt has been made on the FB too. From the top, I found nozzer's route, he was certainly more restrained with the secateurs, but I wouldn't have liked to scramble up there. [ExP-49/MiP-0/BM-1]

climbed up opposite side from the trig so had a heck of a time getting through those tree/bush things (a LOT tougher than Gorse) but finally got there. As mentioned by Clochandighter and Fasgadh the spider is gone as is the plug...maybe Allen Keys decided to start a new collection. Tried to cut down some of the cragy bushes to no avail...tools are needed for that I think. Although all the hassle was definetely worth it as can be seen in the pics..... :)

Summit is called Dun Evan. As previous logs report, the whole spider has been taken - some time ago by the look of it. There is also damage around the LHS of the FB and underneath down to the sighting hole, but thankfully the FB is still secure. The pillar is otherwise in very good condition. The FB faces SSE (170°). 2 sighting holes (bk+f) open. Views sweep round clockwise from SE to NW. High shrubbery blocks the rest. Access to pillar was via a steep SW slope with chest high ferns infilled with nettles - hands got a bit stung. The summit was solid blackthorn, and the area around the trig got the chop for photographic reasons. Extreme care must be taken descending, you cannot see your feet in the ferns, and the rock is moss covered. Also there are sheer drops in most directions, again hidden by undergrowth. History: completed 13th March 1953, secondary station in Block NJ06, Nairn.

Some idiot had chiseled out the spider and almost got the FP. Interesting location in a hillfort mostly surrounded by crags. One corner gives access, but the nettles are growing. The summit is covered in blackthorn, just coming into blossom. Visited after orienteering in the surrounding wood, thank goodness they did not stick a control up here.
