Parked at gliding club car park then walked down the road and over gate - all very overgrown with bracken and fern and lots of gorse and broom easy enough to find we just followed the fence up and then switched over it would have been great views but the weather was unkind to us on this day but Rocco still had a good time.

Lovely parking and picnic area beside the glider airstrip. So good in fact, that we got the stove out and had a brew. Eventually set off and followed Sealf4’s route. It was soggy in bits. No bracken just now but still whins and heather on the summit to negotiate. Really good views up and down Strathdee. Came back down through the adjoining silver birch wood but it wasn’t really any better. With Nozzer.

Bracken will be hell in summer. Near the summit a mixture of broom and a few gorse bushes. A path (probably animal) leads thru' the worst of it at NO 49345 99180 but possibly impossible to see once the bracken is fully grown

Parked at layby with picnic tables (NO494988) then walked back along Deeside way to end of track. Walked track until fence line that goes up beside the trees to the east. I am glad the ground was frozen as I suspect it would have been very soggy. In fact the snow which had prevented me going on to bigger hills came in significantly reducing any views but being quite fun. TP appeared to be in good condition (protected by the inevitable gorse maybe). The spide was intact complete with lettering.

Parked at start of an old track (NO 4963 9883). Took the track for approx 250m, then straight up over rough ground. Gorse and broom higher up, but can weave in and around it ok. Lot of dead bracken, could be trickier at different time of year. Pillar sits in moderately dense vegetation; an original centre cap is retained, deeply indented lettering; RHS sight hole open. Extensive panorama.

The 7 is for the view! -7 for the terrain! Parked at NO 49624 98925, over gate and along track, then up the hill through the head high ferns, which covered rocks and holes until you reach the heather/thorns/broom/gorse. Meet a stag at the trigpoint and watched some more gliders before heading off down to battle the hillside on my return. Managed to follow the fenceline most of the way, easier than being in the middle of the ferns.

Cows, Bulls, Calves - it's the ferns you need to worry about! ©thejackrustles

Revisit. HISTORY: Pillar completed 8th April 1956 costing £28.9s.6½d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NJ40/8 within the Ballater block during 1956. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision also in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in August 1973. SITE VISIT: Approached from south. Free public parking in picnic site to south of A93 at NO493986. Walked along A93 to track at NO495988. Followed track to end of woods then beeline north up through deep ferns following boundary fence to high point. Then climbed westwards through broom to summit. Top was in dense broom, some selective gardening was done to clear the pillar. Column in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces northwest, compass measurement 301°. Vented through right (SW) sight hole. Panoramic outlook but overtopped by trees to the north.

A proper fight up the rough hillside from the path running just south of the trig. Lovely colours tho and found a weird granite block with an H carved in either side (a few metres West of the trig).
