Having struggled in the strong winds doing a circular walk to tick off the two nearby farmland trigs we rewarded ourselves with this nice and easy roadside bag. Parked up in the side road and checked it out form each angle. Nothing spectacular in this the least appealing corner of Cumbria, so we headed off for a beer at The Sun Inn at Red Dial.

First trig of a seven trig ' bag' East to West from Dundraw...With roadside parking just off the B5302 t-junction at GR 215 492 a nice & easy roadside 'bag' to 'kick-off' the seven. Unable to walk around the trig consequence of close proximity to the hedge, I did second best thing, something I always do in such situations, climbed on top of the thing. The immediate environs of the trig were free from car debris mentioned by G4VFL. Dundraw in the 'bag' off I went to 'knock off' High Scales, Whinbank, Aldoth, Raise How, Beckfoot & Salta, with the added bonus having 'time to spare on my hands' of Barren Hill on the way back to Manchester 'giving' me my 647th trig. Getting harder & harder to get as maps complete, having to travel further & further afield to get them, I reckon there must come a time, sad as that may be, when enough is enough & one stops actively pursuing trig points. That time's close by for me, sure i'll get 750 but 1000 seems most doubtful. Sure i'll continue to 'collect' the pillars here & there as I travel around the country on holiday with partner Pam but another 250 having got 750 seems like an awful big ask! Unless that is, I extend my radius of travel from Manchester even further...The E to W Dundraw Seven & 'tagged-on' Barren Hill was a 271 mile 'round' trip...Long drives, multiple stops having found somewhere new to park, numerous shoe to boot changes & fresh navigations, it's all so demanding. In my opinion, The Wainwright's have nothing on 'Trigbagging'!

WAB activation on VHF. This pillar has some abuse with cars trying to knock it over, generally the trig has won !. Lots of plastic debris at the foot of the pillar.

Across the road . It would appear that the car glanced the trig then crossed the side road and went trough the hedge into the field©G4VFL

Easily found on the corner of the junction to Dundraw from the Wigton to Silloth road. Everything seems to be in one piece, but the views aren't great due to the height of the hedge around it.

The mountains are in heavy greys and the hills of Scotland hover purple nearby. Other than that it's a thundering A road - I suspect it's a place of intriguing beauty - at some times.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 24th March 1952 costing £20.10s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NY45/11 within the Carlisle block during 1953. Levelled for height in 1972. Last maintained by the OS in March 1977. SITE VISIT: Parked just around the corner in side road making this a quick and easy approach. Roadside pillar. This column appears to have taken a knock from a vehicle which didn`t quite make the road bend. It is now leaning eastwards. Spider has replacement OS cap with raised small letters. Flush bracket faces 176° south. Vented through east sight hole, west and south breaking open.

In good nick, smack on the road junction, a bit weedy with half buried base. The SouthEast sight is open with the others half-closed.
