Another one I didn't intend to do as I'd ticked off 4 already today and the rain was becoming tiresome. However, the pillar came into view as we drove along the road making it impossible to pass on by. Pulled up in front of the gate, put on the rain clobber again and made a quick dash into the field up to the pillar. Nice views all around and a decorative stone circle around the base. Back to the car and home.

Handy gate gives access to the field with the pillar, which can be seen off the road. I was pursued to the top by 16 white faced Texel sheep who were SO pleased to see me. The pillar was in the middle of a ring of stones and in reasonable nick. The views were far ranging but with low cloud on the tops,not very inspiring. The 16 sheep were crestfallen when I returned to the car without feeding them. I then went on to do a few miles of the badly signposted Ribble Way near Wigglesworth.

A handy gateway just below the mast to park and give access to the field. No animals present but plenty of their traces were. Views are quite good.

Not on a high eminence - just off the road across from a small copse - but great all-round views to higher ground on all sides. Comes complete with its own decorative circle of border stones round the base.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 10th April 1949 costing £10.16s.8d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD96/T10 during 1951. Levelled for height in 1968. Last maintained by the OS in May 1976. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Easy parking in bend to SW side of road at SD809552 by comms mast. Through one gate and straight across grazing field, cattle sociable. Pillar in good condition. Replacement plastic top cap fitted into spider by Jon Rouse, 12/03/2000. Flush bracket faces NNE, ~17°. Vented through SW sight hole. Open outlook in most directions.

In a field to the left just off the Paythorne - Wigglesworth road driving towards Wigglesworth. Clearly visible as you drive along. No footpath marked across the field so I pulled up by a gatehole a few hundred yards down the road and walked up the gentle hill and out of sight of the farm until the last few yards. Great view of Pendle in the background and trig in good condition, though minus it's original brass plug. Set in stone circle which is only the second I've come across.

Easily accessible and very visible. I saw it from the road (Settle Lane) and used the path near the farm to reach it but just came staright back to the road through the nearest gate. Surrounded by a pleasant circle of stones so at some time in it's life it must have been loved. Nice views of the surrounding area. Trig in good condition although has plastic plug.

As mickandshane say, a gate in the wall approx 150 yards to the north is the easiest access. Good view of Pendle Hill but the views north are limited by the small wood on the other side of the road. Final trig on a 21 miler (on foot of course) from Long Preston to Hellifield. No cars, on foot.

It's easier to go straight through the gate to the trig (it's visible from the road) rather than following the public footpath via the farm. Mast and rookery close by. A ring of stones around the base of the trig- something you don't see very often nowadays. Plastic plug.
