Parked on the A65 West a quarter of a mile or so from the farm track...Very busy road! Having knocked on the farmhouse door to politely ask for access, with no answer, I cautiously proceeded bearing left across the cattle grid to take the tarmac track, as by all accounts from a 2005 entry is the farmers preferred route. A short detour right through a gate uphill gave access to the trig.

In the Settle area to show youngest son the best spots to wild swim - a pool below Catrigg Force and in the Ribble below Stainforth Force. He returned the favour by dropping me off on the A65 at the farm lane entrance to Middle Field Hill. Followed the track until the 3rd cattle grid, then turned right and headed uphill to an obvious gate and the top of the hill beyond. Really good all round views with hilly skylines in every direction

Visited along with S5343 Flambers Hill on a 10 mile walk from Hellifield. The pillar is visible from a long way off on the approach this way, however the route was an access nightmare of missing stiles, dead-end footpaths, blocked gates and redirected PROWs. For example, getting to this one from High Ground Farm was a real effort. The farm has blocked the route of the PROW, and non-existent signage means you're left to fend for yourself and wander through the farm past the cattery. Eventually you find yourself at SD 874 550 and the PROW just dies. There's a solid dry stone wall in your way, no path, no stile. In full view of the farm, then, I hopped over carefully and stalked up Hard Knot Hill. The pillar commands stunning views - Pendle Hill prominent to the south - and is in good, weathered condition. I was followed by a few dozen sheep as I headed east to do battle with the local interpretation of 'access' en route to Flambers Hill.

The approach Make your own way through High Ground Farm.
Dead end PROW Again, you have to make your own luck here.
