Cows with calves in field. Lovely farmer in yard, asked permission and he walked with me down the lane and held my dog while I walked up behind wall to Trig. He said they were unsettled after groups of people had walked through that morning and didn't want them to frighten me. What a thoughtful farmer.

Friendly farmer (ex fellow Myerscough OB) pointed me in the right direction. The pillar is situated under the only prominent tree on the skyline. The surprise view of Manchester was a plus on the edge of this rural plateau.

In the middle of a field of cows, parked at farm farm and then asked for permission to visit the trig point. Cows were very noisy so a good job we asked for permission. Cut mark on barn which took us a while to find https://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm62735

Farmer allowed permission to cross field to access. Normally cows are in the field. Amazing views from the trig point. Can see Manchester, and winter hill and beyond.

From parking area at the cross roads nearby. After visiting the Pillar we headed for Bentley Hall Rd and Walshaw. From here we lunched at a Reservoir I’ve forgotten the name of, then headed to the top of Ainsworth. From here we followed the Rotary Way back to the car

Missing plug. Knocked at the farm but nobody there. Followed the Public FP gate but didnt take the path, diverted directly to the trig instead.

Stroll in the unexpectedly beautiful countryside up the hill - oh and by mistake - another trig. Cows come up for a look, the time of Summer when foxgloves are coming to an end and the willowherb masses. Said a distant hello to the rheas and pigs afterwards.

walked up from harwood, eventually joining the rotary and then cutting across field opposite the heights. good views including Manchester, Bolton and fiddlers ferry power station. trig could do with a lick of paint and plug

from farm entrance down the track to farm knocked on doors , nobody home , continued on track to gate and followed wall to trig which sits on a meadow top next to a wall with a small tree close by , the trig is in good condition with an open cap and three open sight holes , good 360 views

HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th May 1940 costing £4.4s.3d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD80/T47 during 1945. Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards during 1957. Last maintained by the OS in September 1979. SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked in short layby, south side of Tottington Road by farm entrance at SD727127. Walked farm track to west corner of field then followed boundary wall to top. Edge of grazing field, NE of boundary line. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces northeast across field, compass measurement 51°. All visible sight holes open SW facing port buried, innards blocked with debris. Good open outlook in most directions.

Lunched in Ramsbottom basking in the sunshine. Out on A676 and turned off through Affetside, pausing to admire their Millennium Green. No one in sight at farm and no answer at house, so used wicket gate by house into graasy field and a short distance to pillar. Despite the sunshine the distant hills just grey haze.

Got it wrong on my aproach to this one,walked across a links golf course tresspassed 3 fields jumping fences on way!Trig in vgc plug missing good views of Bolton area trig cannot be seen from road as a bush is growing behind it.

We aepproached via the footpath to the north. The trig is to the east side of a stone wall with the FB facing east. The approach across the field was extremely muddy - Shane decided to stay at the gate! Plug missing.
