(Revisit) Went to the pillar clearing whilst walking an old favourite Norwood Edge route. The changes over the last few years have been amazing - the growth of the trees, especially the birches, will probably see the pillar return to being fully under the canopy line within a couple of years. I refrained from the scramble this time - pillar looked as good as ever!

The woodland and summit is criss crossed by boggy trails created largely by mountain bikers, while the woodland hides the trig until the last minute.

An evening revisit to my favourite local whilst on a quick walk around Norwood. I parked at the large hardstanding off the B6451 near Top Lane, and just about managed to find the right combination of tracks straight to the pillar. Unfortunately, the plantation has recently been completely taken over by mountain bikers, and there are now dozens of trails crisscrossing all over the place. The trees around the rock the trig stands on have also put on some real growth, so you can't see the pillar now until quite close. The short scramble is still a teasing little challenge - I think my spreading middle-age waistline is tempering my agility. The pillar is still magnificent, though - in great condition, in an amazing location with stunning views. As good as it gets.

I doubt theres a view from the top as its surrounded by forrestation but a good rating for style! REVISITED 09/03/2008 and the change in the 2 years has been tremendous. The woodland around the trig has been zapped, it looks like something Saruman might have done to bits of Fangorn forest and the trig is very prominant now. You now get a good view to Menwith Hill & Armscliffe Crag, although west is still blocked by the trees. The ladder John mentions was not in evidence today. The path I used on both occassions - from the north, down from Little Armsclife, that was a small but dicsernable path approx 18 inches wide has now been utilised by the mountain bike brigade and is an absolute messy mush in places and 4 foot wide at times. Well done lads, yet another triumph for the two wheeled idiots - just what is it about the word FOOTPATH that these morons dont understand!!!!!!!!
