Parked up in the A1M slip road and walked alongside the motorway until the embankment looked to be climbable. scrambled up and before too long the pillar was in view. Climbed over the rickety fence to be greeted with the most elegant pillar I've clocked so far. Decent views of the motorway and eastwards towards The Humber. Embankment was too crumbly to descend, so made my way down through the head high grass and prickly stuff. Seemed to disturb a drugs deal as I returned so that was a bonus!

A belter! Was expecting good things of this one given its location, and it did not disappoint. I parked up in the strange little pull-in off the A645, and was faced with head-height vegetation. A good battle uphill later and the pillar came into view behind the delapidated fence. Beware here, the ground beneath the jungle is very uneven. The trig was in fine condition albeit with some minor top spalling, peeling paint and an asphalt replacement cap. Good, if unusual, views; it's just great that it survived the motorway development when so many don't make it. I returned the same way, covered head to toe in nettle stings, thistle rash and grass seeds. Worth it - this is a great pillar to visit. The slip-road did not look appropriate for joining the M1 by the way, so I reversed my approach.

There is plenty of parking room here and I shared it with an Ambulance Responder who was waiting for his next call. I had to explain why I was about to climb the gate next to his vehicle and just got a raised eyebrow response. Anyway once over the gate it was just a matter of following the fence line up to the trig through hip high grass and crops. Pillar is still there which is quite a miracle considering how close it must have come to removal to make way for the motorway. The pillar has suffered some damage to the top as someone has made an attempt to remove the spider sometime in the past. If you like motorways then this is a good place to view one from. A far cry from when I regularly travelled north on the A1. How things change! Easy access from the A 654. Even travelled briefly on the old road.

Access is indeed now easy from the north where there is a place to pull a car off the road and park up not blocking the various gates.

Initially approached from the east but the 'road workings' made that dubious so jumped the wooden fence south of the pond (not shown on my 2000 map - it's the other side of the road from the hotel) then followed the field edges to the trig. When they've finished pratting about with the road diversions I'd imagine access will be a doddle.

Surviving the allignment but not the construction traffic. Looks set to be right on the top of the cutting but the top has taken a bashing of late with one arm of the spider exposedvery dark now thankfully a halogen bike torch was on hand to prevent completely twisted ankles. Now on to Charwood hotel in Blyth and a very good meal.

Spent a while looking for an approach to this trig; couldn't see it from the wooded embankment of the old motorway and the direct line from the road was too visible. Eventually worked around field edges and reached the trig from the south side.

trig - slight damage to top.

Its still there, and looks fairly secure the way the road embankments are being designed. The slope stops 10 foot away, and it looks complete.

noted on my map at visit that it was NE edge of a field but since my first visit the new A1M motorway had been squeezed between it and the M62 so that it is now on top of a bank standing sentinel above the A1M within couple hundred metres of both motorways!
