Parked in residential area to south west of the hill, up Tollards Road, north east of Topsham Road. Footpath signposted through to Pyne’s Hill. Open common ground popular with dog walkers. Headed for high ground north across open field to gate in corner then east, stayed on south side of tree line, gained a little more height , into another field, started looking in tree line for pillar. Asked a couple of dog walkers neither had seen it. Vegetation quite thick. Thought there might be signs of path worn through by other visitors. Then spotted it , top peeping above a purple flowering creeper plant. Quite well hidden. There’s the remains of a wire fence but more of a trip hazard than an obstacle. No views at all, although outside the bushes quite good views to south west. Cap missing. Did a bit of tidying up but left most of the creeper there as it was quite attractive. Moved some logs piled up on the FB side, bit inconvenient.

Gave this one a 7 because there are some lovely views of Exeter from the adjacent fields... but there's none from the pillar itself, which is fenced in to a tree-lined gully. A portion of fence directly behind the pillar has collapsed, allowing access, but clambering down to the front of it is a bit of a faff. Still, it's in good nick, it's on a mahoosive concrete plinth, and the walk up to it (from nearby Tollards Road) was very pleasant. There are worse ways to start the day...
