Approached from east along footpath beside Quarley Manor Farm. About twenty minute walk south west, just after partly collapsed barn on the right, hill rises on the north west. Over low fence. At the time, field was stubble. Fairly steep climb. At top is a reservoir and a gate into the raised grassy area next to it where the pillar is. At the time still quite misty so limited views. Badly cracked above the base. Ancient hill fort.

Parked in the layby on the B3084 to the WSW of the trig, then walked E along the public footpath (see satellite image attached). Slight deviation from the public footpath (where the 90 degree left turn is on the route) to climb up the hill to the fort, but going via this route, I encountered no "private keep out" signs and I didn't have to get through any barbed-wire fences at all. I wouldn't consider this one 'trespassy' at all. The fort is surrounded by barbed-wire fence, but the NE entrance to the fort (where the reservoir is) has a gate-opening but no gates. 26 minutes walk one way. Trig is located near the NE entrance to the fort, severely cracked (as has been reported by previous loggers), founded on a square concrete plinth, original metal cap with lightly-indented letterings, 3 sightholes open, left sighthole partially closed. I left a 2p coin in the front sighthole for the next visitor to find.

Bagged on a 12 mile from Middle Wallop as part of my Walk 2020 Miles challenge. As others have mentioned it is off the PROW so asked a workman heading towards the reservoir on the hill for permission and he was happy for me to wander up.

Went through gates on lane to SE. This proved to be a grassy track all the way up the hill to a small covered reservoir and right by the pillar. Would suggest severe cracking is due to water ingress and freezing.

No public access onto the neolithic hill fort where this trig is located. 'Private Keep Out' signs abound. The area seems to be a pheasant nursery. Contrary to how tom, below, found the field, it had been harvested and not ploughed/replanted but left with stubble so the footpath was quite distinct, not that I followed it, but I did cross it, having parked on the B3084 near Portway Farm and took a direct line across the field to the hill fort. The ground was hard with frost so mud not a problem. Excellent views to the north, west and east from the trig, those to the south obscured by the summit of the hill fort, the pillar being located at the NE end. My previous trig at Beacon Hill was prominent. The pillar is indeed badly damaged with severe cracks on 3 sides (the back shows no signs of damage). 3 sight holes fully open, 1 partially open; the original metal cap is in place.

Parked by footpath on B3084, Grateley road. This pillar is within an Iron Age hillfort, which surely should be open to all. Therefore, ignored 'private - no access' signs, and clambered over one barbed wire fence.Within this ancient fort was another warning: 'private - shooting in progress'. Obviously a hostile 'landowner' - fully deserved to be ignored. The sign appeared to have been there a long time; certainly no gunfire today, so carried on. Wonderful hilltop fort of 8 acres with originally two main entrances (to the south-west & north-east). Severe cracking damage to pillar around the flush bracket - looked deliberate to me; its's hardly in a postion to be damaged by any kind of farmwork. I love these old places, and of course treat them with respect; never could understand the concept of so called private property.

The pillar stands on the ramparts close to the entrance of an Iron Age hill fort to the west of Andover. The trig stands on a one foot plinth and has severe cracking at FB level. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S1692. The site was approached by the footpath from the B3084 Cholderton Road to the west. The large field on the south west slope of the hill had a young crop breaking through and the right of way was not apparent when it leaves the field boundary. I skirted the field to its northern corner and then took the track up to the south west entrance of the hill fort. I then followed the ramparts to the opposite side of the hill to reach the trig. From the pillar a patchwork of flat farmland and woods disappeared into the mist to the east. A low wooded ridge could be seen to the north and a gently rippling landscape of fields continued to a higher ridge in the distance to the south. From the opposite end of the camp there is an extensive view over flat farmland to the west and the woods on Tower Hill can be seen to the south west. The ramparts of the hill fort have been designated a SSSI.

On a long walk from Amport (since this is not on the Am and demonstrably not a port we are unsure of the origin of its name!). Decided not to leave the adjacent ROW since we were already struggling with shoulder high oil seed rape and a complete absence of waymarking, without adding trespass to our list!

Easy to locate, but access is not so easy. There are plenty of signs telling you to stay away, and in addition toadaythere were some cattle accompanied by a bull. No sign telling you of this, but as there is no public footpath across the hill, maybe none is needed.
