Slightly damaged 19th Mar 2023  16:55  by Trigger monster

FB Number: S3505  Condition: Slightly damaged  Score: 7/10

Heading south west on the A381 about a mile after Halwell easy to miss the turning left onto a narrow lane. Went past on first approach. East along narrow lane then south west along track but good surface and able to pull in at water station or mast compound. Through gap in mounds to field to south then turn east. Pillar about 150 metres east in corner of the field tilting at a jaunty angle, otherwise good condition. Raised S prefix. Good views to south west although weather closing in so a bit obscured. Spider and cap in place.

At the edge of a field behind a large telecoms/gas/reservoir complex. Accessed from the lane and then climbed over a gate. The pillar is at a jaunty angle, presumably as a result of a failed attempt by a tractor to remove it.

Drive by en route back from Dartmoor and Bellever. Judging by other logs, I went the long way round through the compound and over a bramble covered bank and barbed wire fence! But found a trig in vgc with good views to the south and west. Interesting, as Peregrinus has noted for Fursdon to the south, this one also has its cap held in place by slotted screws cf Allen screws. Must be a local specialism.

We parked at the coss roads on the yellow road due north of the pillar. Walked south east down the lane towards Higher Cliston and entered the field with the trig in via a gate just south of the east - west hedgeline. The hedge shields you from the nearby farm buildings. The pillar is just outside the compound fence which now contains a newly built covered reservoir. Good views. Plug with indented lettering.
