Parked in pub carpark and tried to access via track to water-tower. Would be possible to step over a run-down barbed wire fence, but homeowner was in the garden 10m away so didnt fancy it. Asked if he knew how to access and he advised to ask at farm. Went back to pub carpark to see if any access via carpark - none. Drove to farm to ask permission. Spoke with farmer who gave permission, but advised that I would be disappointed as the trig was no longer there and had been recently removed. I didnt ask any more details as I was keen to check for myself and didnt want to have permission denied. Walked to site and sure enough, trig nowhere to be seen. I used a previous photo of the trig which included the shed and brick tower to orientate myself to correct location (see side-by-side photo). I have logged as 'cant find' but I am sure the trig isnt in its original location. I dint have time to hunt about for remains, but I had a quick visual check and couldnt see anything. Disappointing.

(331) After checking out the water tower, I then drove back to Grove Farm to ask for permission to visit this pillar, and it was freely given. Had a good chat with the father, and then the son, who told me all about the history of the place, and of it's use by the RAF during WWII. It was then a short walk to the pillar which is in very good condition. Whilst there, I had a quick look around the buildings, as well as a closer look at the water tower. Pillar history: Built on the 12th of November 1956, at a cost of £21 0s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in September of 1987.

I got here by driving down a very long narrow road in the dark with drainage ditches on either side! Quite an adventure! Trig in fine condition.

I've been to try to visit this trig before as the YOSM travelling geocache has visited it but couldn't find a way in. There was no-one at the house to ask permission to go through the gate so left it despite it being temptingly visible from the road. A different day today and this time there was someone to ask. They duly obliged albeit with a few questions about trigpointing but I assured them I'd cause no damage to either the gate or the land and they seemed fine about it. All in good order here and glad to get this one ticked off.

Parked at the picnic site just North of Epworth on the A161. Took the PROW NW across fields of barley to Carrhouse Rd then along the lanes to Sandtoft. Pillar is easily accessed via the track at SE 74245 08091 (just West of the Reindeer Inn). Gates were wide open when I visited but it would be no problem stepping over the adjacent, low barb-wired fence. Should also be possible to access via the bridge at SE 74250 07603 then walking North along the bank of Idle Drain past Grove Farm (but you'd be pretty easily seen). Pillar itself is in good nick with an original metal cap and raised lettering. Sight holes are just below ground level. Surroundings nothing special - entire area is very flat with a proliferation of drainage dykes which reminded me of childhood visits to Romney Marsh in Kent. Returned to Epworth via Scawcett Ln taking in the two old windmills on the northern edge of the village.

I wasn’t sure how to get to this one but in the end, it was easier than I’d thought. Go up the short lane next to the pub and when no-one is looking, go through the fence on the left. From there, it’s a short walk around the back of what looks like and old wartime airfield building to the pillar. Probably best if you’re not wearing a bright red anorak and pick a time of day when there are not many people about as you will be visible from the adjacent pub and houses. The pillar is complete with all it’s metalwork and in good condition, albeit a might grubby. There’s nothing much in the way of views as the pillar is in a paddock surrounded by trees, bushes and old buildings.

Not sure whos land it is on, it seems to be a Yorkshire Water site but it isnt fenced from this route, the old building contains farm machinery and farm type rubbish so it could belong to the farm.
