We were lucky that cleaners were working in the club house so we had easy access to the pillar which sits in the hedge behind the cricket pitch.

Managed to get to it on the north path. A gate was resting against the barbed wire, so with its aid, manage to get over without any damage. The plate was pointing downhill.

3/8 Parked in cricket club and asked groundsman who was rolling the grass for permission to cross over to the trig, all part of opening up after lifting of covid-19 restrictions. Permision readily given and trig was easily found in the hedge, harder in summer with more growth I should think. On to Brown Hedge, it was getting hotter.

Walked over from Bishop Park which is the source of the River Medlock before it enters the River Irwell in Manchester city centre. Came off the Medlock Valley Way to visit this pillar and used the PRoW around the quarry to the west. Returned to MVW which went via "Cairo" to get to Manchester. I am NOT a city person, but during lockdown visiting pillars and discovering local trails I am astonished how many green corridors and parks there are in Manchester. It's been such a pleasure, so Slack Hall is for open spaces in cities.

Short 2 minute walk from the cricket club. Much easier to see in winter when the brambles and hedgerow has died back. Very easy to miss if you don't know where it is.

Through the scorched edges of the Medlock, past the little millennium stone that has been put up. Beautiful spot, very sad to see Winter Hill piled with smoke from some arses arson as well as from Saddleworth.

a quick amble around the cricket ground passing in front of the pavilion and then climbed the banking to the trig which sits in a hedge by a fence -the trig is in good condition and will give an excellent view of the cricket

HISTORY: Pillar completed 16th May 1940 costing £4.2s.9d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD80/T92 in 1945. Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards during 1958. Last maintained by the OS in February 1980. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Ample public street parking in Thorpe Lane, SD961057. Clockwise route around the fence around (outside) Austerlands Cricket Club then up embankment to top. Edge of grazing field just outside cricket ground. Pillar in young hedge but in good condition. Spider centre asphalt. Flush bracket faces northwest across field, compass measurement 316°. Presumed vented through SE sight hole which is buried, the other three are plugged. Partial views. Part of a 24 trig stint around the northern outskirts of Manchester.

No 3/5 Parked at the Cricket Pavilion, some guys doing refurbishment work and were fine with me leaving the car for the short stroll across the pitch boundary to the TP. I imagine its been a useful seat for many a cricket match in the past, unfortunately that's about all I could see from my visit minus the players. logging the FB is a little awkward unless you do a little fence hopping.

Asphalt plug. Private. Owner uncertain, as wedged in 'no man's land' between fences separating Austerlands cricket ground from farmland beyond. Easily accessed from public footpath round edge of disused quarry. FB faces field, which is easy enough to get into.

So nearly a wonderful spot. The pitch at Aus Cricket Club is one of those, like Broadbottom, where you feel a good strike would clear three counties. It has us beat though by having a pillar look down on it. But the downside is that there is a lot of intrusion here which detracts from the 240 degree views. I may be doing this area an injustice. I was thinking of a circular walk, but in the end it was a park-and-bag.
