Not having the logs, it took some finding. I would not say it was inaccessible (unless work is going on), it is in a box surrounded by earth, obviously under protection until the renovation has finished. Early morning visit, no one around but the puffins.

Quick late evening visit only but a few puffins spotted on the cliffs. Having seen the recent logs and reviewing my photos - I saw the wooden box! Top of it is about level with an earth bank beside new concrete walls. They are evidently working around the pillar and it will hopefully reappear outside the new building in a year's time.

My first trig stop having arrived on the overnight ferry from Aberdeen this morning, and after breakfast at the Co-op in Lerwick. I parked at the car park at the bottom of the hill and walked up the road leading to the lighthouse. As already mentioned there is construction work being undertaken. The pillar’s condition should be 'temporarily covered' - it's encased in a wooden enclosure for the duration of the (dangerously close) works to renovate the lighthouse and its environs. I could see the 'orange box' from a distance but a friendly workman took a closer photo for me. I consider it as close to a bag as I'll get until the works are finished!

There is some serious redevelopment work going on in the lighthouse at the moment - completion spring 2014 according to the sign. The pillar is currently inaccessible and I wasn't able to catch a glimpse of it - I'll assume it's still there and will be unveiled with a new coat of whitewash in 2014!

Earlier in the day I’d visited the Ward Hill trig pillar and this evening I decided to head up here as well while the weather was still on my side. I took the road up to The Compass first and then followed the great path along the top of the cliffs as far as the lighthouse car park. Being late in the evening I was privileged to have the place all to myself to study the views and sea birds. After taking in the trig and lighthouse I returned via the swanky Sumburgh Hotel.
