This pillar sits obligingly in a green field a short distance from the enticingly-named village of Tosside on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, just inside the Red Rose county. Hopped over the farm gate in Longton's Lane and glided across said field to find a plastic cap and two sight-holes open.

I parked in a handy gateway just to the south of the gateway that gives access to this field, gate fastened, not locked. Sheep were present. Views are good to the east - Yorkshire! This pillar is just in Lancashire.

Initially I started looking for this trig a bit too far north, as I headed for the highest ground in sight. The views from where I expected the pillar to be were a lot better than from the actual location. Disappointing.

Trig easy to find but pub grub less so, though I rode my luck into the fine Crow Trees restaurant twenty minutes later for a heavenly steak pie and chips. Yum yum yum!!

HISTORY: Pillar completed 22nd June 1949 costing £13.8s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SD96/T48 in 1951. Levelled for height in 1952. Last maintained by the OS in May 1976. SITE VISIT: Nearest safe parking in wide entrance of lane to west of pub at SD768561. Followed Longtons Lane northwards from village until reaching gate of trig field. Final approach from east. Grazing field. Pillar in good condition. Replacement plastic top cap fitted into spider by Jon Rouse, 30/01/2000. Flush bracket faces west, ~264°. Vented through east and south sight holes. Open outlook in most directions, Ingleborough just visible over trees.

Did this after getting back to Tosside from the walk up to the trig at Whelpstone Crag. This one though is just five minutes walk up the from pub at Tosside so a big bonus. Trig is just a hundred yards or so off the road and in good condition with plastic plug.

Easily accessible and very visible. In the middle of a field off Longtons Lane. Just needed to go through gate and walk a hundred yards to the trig. Lovely area with nice views. In good condition with plastic plug

Passable view, just beyond end of forestation. Gate to the north gives easy access - you can see it towards the distance, centre of frame in saginanivalis' 'S566 trig' photo. Done on a long hike from Long Preston to Hellifield. No cars, on foot.
