Indirect route into Atherstone for brunch. Didn't want to disappoint "whats the point" and made sure I passed the trig heading out for the afternoon's ride. Trig easily seen at this time of year; later its hard to spot through greenery of "hedge".

First day of year in shorts! Hard ride into wind to Meriden for 11s. Reached outskirts of Coventry before heading into Atherstone for 2nd stop of the day. Told off by "whats the point" for not visiting this pillar when last in the area, so made sure to do so today. A much sunnier afternoon than the morning. A zig-zagging route home so some sections skimmiing along with a tail wind and others grinding along in to it. Passed 3000 miles for the year.

Thought I’d try and get a trig bagged after work today. Probably a mistake in hindsight, as it was extremely cold and I was loosing daylight, but never the less, No. 49, Upton is now bagged. It was difficult to find, the nearest postal code simply wasn’t close at all! The trig itself is within the hedgerow and I expect that it would have been totally engulfed by greenery and impossible to see if it were not mid winter.

On a roundabout route out to the cafe in Hinckley. Away early to make the most of the morning sunshine. Missed a good photo opportunity as the sun was directly on the pillar. Clouding over by late morning, but a very light wind. A longer meandering afternoon saw me pass 90 miles for the day.

Took advantage of the lack of traffic and used the main roads by way of a change of route. Felt I had to log a visit somewhere to follow those on Xmas Day in each of the two previous years. A bus shelter provided a dry seat to stop and consume my packed lunch!

Parked on Upton Lane. Crawled under electric fence into trig field, where pillar can be found in hedge. However, cannot see much from that side. Actually found that be climbing into the hedge from the road side, can see a lot more. That is also the side that the flush bracket is on, and you can get a better view of the spider and the column.

(2579) Pre-visit planning revealed that this one might be an awkward one to tick off, due to the time of year and its location, but it all passed off well in the end. Upton Lane is narrow, but there's a handy passing point nearby and that was used for quick parking. Pillar ensconced in a hedge but viewable, and all appears to be in good overall condition. Horses in the field did come over to see what was making all the rustling noises. Pillar history: Built on the 14th of November 1948, at a cost of £4 1s 8d. Last maintained by the OS in July of 1978.

A re-visit by bike. I came down the lane a few weeks back without realizing I’d passed the pillar – I happened to see it on the map when I was planning another ride – so I stopped spent some time peering through the hedge – just a few thorns to pull aside to get access. Some lovely lanes for biking this way – continued onto Witherley and took five minutes in the churchyard – a lovely spot with a stream and ducks to feed.

Parked at gateway just off roadside and walked back up road to Trig, Pillar just about visible through thorny edge so made my way in for a closer look. Trig in good condition with all its metal work, FB is facing the roadside so better to view it from that way than from the privately owned horse field behind it. No real views to speak of only out over a field with horses in

My rule is to only log my first visit, but as it will be a long time before I reach a new pillar, I thought I'd log this easy roadside pillar in passing. Well hidden in hedge line: it will be difficult to spot when the leaves have grown. Keeping to the lanes. Giving a friendly smile and greeting to people I pass.Found a spot further down the lane which was sheltered from strong wind for snack and drink.

En route home from Nottingham and time for a little more trigging. This took some finding - invisible from the road due to hedge growth, but a faint triggers path marked the spot. Very limited views north of horses and rolling Leicestershire. Metal cap, shallow letters, E s/hole open, otherwise excellent condition.

In hedge, visible from road through a gap. Squeezed though gap to the pillar avoiding getting tangled in brambles. The reward was the pillar surrounded with horse muck which has been carefully cleared from the jumping circuit. Pillar is very close to edge of ditch, with foundations slightly exposed

easy roadside location coming from the Nuneaton side there is a pullin on the bend just 20m short of the trig after a gate with a permanent access note. FB on road face stopped in Dorley overnight and can recomend the Indian Resturant on the A5 by the petrol station

An easy spot in a hedge by a lane with FB facing outwards for once. Original plug with slightly indented letters. NE sighthole open, the others closed. A little white paint visible. Quite a lot of horsiculture around. Wide views over farmland but nothing special.

An easily accessible roadside trig on a quiet road. The trig forms part of the hedge and fence keeping the horses in but it looks like a bit of a weak point to me and an escape bid might be on the cards. I agree with the others that 3 seems a reasonable score for this one.
