Leaning slightly. Circular walk fro South Harting. Approached from Sussex Border Path heading south then right onto South Downs Way. At next footpath to the left, almost at the Hampshire border, turn south west then south east uphill into woods. Track is clearly marked. Hill rises on right into woodland, near where path reaches its summit bear right into woods, no clear path but head for highest point although fairly flat by then. Pillar looks a bit forlorn. Very mossy and hidden. Beyond the trees views to south and west are good but obscured. Extra point for being north west extremity of Sussex.

Pillar in woodland at the top of a hill, accessed by a footpath that skirts around all sides, although actually getting into the wood from the path required a big stick for thistle-whacking. Despite it being a fairly thinly wooded area, pillar was surprisingly difficult to actually spot! On finding it, I noticed it had something white and oddly-shaped resting on top of it. I thought it might be a flower (I once bagged a pillar on Valentines Day which had been adorned with white roses), but when I approached, it turned out to be the picked-clean skull of an animal. Reckon it's a deer, but am not an expert. But it begs the questions how did it get there, and where's the rest of the unfortunate creature? The pillar itself is a little mossy, but otherwise in good condition give or take a bit of a tilt. Do I need to say it offers no views? Fortunately, the (rather brambly and uneven) path up gives a few opportunities to admire the picturesque valley below the wood.

I parked at Uppark (National Trust property-but i am a member so didn't feel guilty). Large easy track up through wooded area. Met 2 other walks who asked if I knew where I was (obviously yes) my guess they were lost They said they had seen the trig and I wouldn't find it as its deep in woodland. Well, that was like a red rag to a bull. I did find it, first time using no fancy technology only a paper map! It's slightly subsiding and has a nice slant going on.

Took me a long time to get to this one, as I ended up walking up the Forrestry road as my legs wont go round anymore. Its a rather disappointing one to finish the day on, as there are no views because of the trees. Might have only done 37miles but it was really hard miles as most of them were off road. Not much easy road work. Best bit is that It all downhill back to the car.

Ohh err - this one's got a right lean on it, strangely like its northern neighbour, Rogate. Circular walk on a lovely sunny afternoon via Compton - where we found the pub taken over by a very jolly wake, so retired to the tea shop and left with two bunches of local asparagus! In a nice beech wood, so rather limited views through the trees. Centre and all s/holes open, and with a significant tilt, so has seen better days, but should be there for a little while yet.

This was a battle of resources. Girlfriend with OS map, me with Sat nav...... after going around and around in circles with a conflict of information due to being ill prepared for this one we eventually found it in the woods just off the SDW. Looks like it has been lifted or moved in some way so we have marked it accordingly as damaged. Was tricky to see in the woods and dappled sunlight as it blended in with the trees. A lot of fun this one, and made for some good memories.
