Pulled in at start of footpath opposite turning for Little Stoke. Along path, east, towards woods. At woods, headed uphill and south. A few worn paths through the woods but head for south east corner. Keep to left of and look out for quarry. Through hedge beside telegraph pole at corner of woods. A little further uphill and through hedge boundary into next field. Pillar a few metres to right. Able to see car parked on roadside to north west. Fairly straightforward, thankfully, daylight beginning to fade and rain off and on.

After reading all the logs here, especially thanks to mickandshane, we thought we had this one 'in the bag' (how wrong were we!) We parked at the layby along the B4009 (enough room for 1 car, possibly 2 cars at a squeeze) opposite Oak Cottages (labelled "The Oak" on OS Explorer Map 170) to the W of the trig. We then walked to the field to the S of Oak Cottages, with the intention of walking along the S side of the hedgerow in the E direction towards the trig. I read on the logs here that the trig is on the S side of the hedgerow, hence that was the plan! However when we got to the field, the farmer was working in the field with his tractor / machinery, so we decided not to do that. We didn't want to get in trouble with the farmer! So we walked N along the road to the bridlepath to the N of Oak Cottages and then walked E along the bridlepath (labelled "Swan's Way" on the OS Explorer Map) until we came to the woods. We couldn't walk up the path / track to the W of the woods as it was completely overgrown, so we walked into the woods and uphill along a footpath that was marked (at the start of the footpath, at the bottom of the woods) with a solitary vertical wooden post. Walking through the woods, we noticed numerous spent shotgun cartridges (I counted 7), which is never a good sign when you're out trig pointing! Within the woods was an interesting chalkpit with a shed and what looked like 2 old gate posts, but the chalkpit was completely overgrown. We continued walking through the woods to the top of the hill and we had to chop our way out of the woods using our gardening tools. Then we found a small thin area of the very dense hedgerow (near where the overhead wires cross the hedgerow) (that must have been formerly a gap in the hedgerow!) and once again we used our gardening tools to make a proper gap for us to get through it. Once through the hedgerow, a bit more walking and we found the trig. And yes, it was on the S side of the hedgerow and barbed wire fence! The trig was pretty much covered with overgrowth, so we did some chopping with our gardening tools once again to tidy the area up. The trig was in good condition with original metal cap. Walked back to the car the same way we came. 7 out of 10 marks for the effort to get to this one! Tips for future visitors: gardening tools are a must. If you can go the other way (walk along the hedgerow to the S of Oak Cottages) then go that way, it'll be a lot easier. And getting out of the layby was incredibly tricky cos of the slight bend in the road, and the cars fly past along that road at way higher than the speed limit in both directions! A bit dangerous! In the winter when the hedgerow will be completely bare, I imagine that you will be able to see the trig from the B4009.

The easiest way to approach this one is to park opposite the cottages at 'The Oak' and follow the hedge line east. The large arable field to the south of the cottages is unfenced which makes access easy. If you do decide to take the bridle track east which is north of the cottages, then head up to the trig just after the bit of woodland where there is a faint path (this is the way we returned to the car).
