Walked up Bridleway from Lower Farm in Gussage St Michael, minor trespass over BWF once in line with the pillar. The 'trespass' was observed, and as we walked back SW we were questioned "Did you get lost - the right of way is another 200m on from the field edge you walked down?" to which I came clean and said "no, just wanted to take a GPS reading from the OS TP" and got the response "Doesn't matter to me, not my land anyway!" Not the first time that has happened to us. Other than that, lovely walk, nice trig, a relatively new and I would guess not cheap enclosure fence specifically there to protect it (from livestock?), poignant memorial plaque, gorgeous weather, and views while lacking in the spectacular are more than decent for hill only just over 100m ASL.

Headed north east from Gussage St Michael along bridle path or byway, not sure which, initially gravel then grass. After about two kilometres of gently climbing, ground levels out. At the top, about 100 metres before a T junction of paths, grassy field on east of track. About fifty metres along the northern field boundary is a clump of trees. Pillar only just visible but not certain without closer investigation. It has its own circular fenced area and a touching plaque in someone’s memory. Although well off the beaten track, good to know it is being looked after. Sadly the FB has been defaced by a, presumably, local individual who stamps their name or initials and date on the FB. It’s very disappointing and annoying. Left hill by turning left at the T junction and heading down to the A354. Story about that for another time.

The pillar is sited on top of a low linear earthwork between a field of long grass and a wheat field. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering, an OS Passive Station plate and FB S2591; its foundations are exposed by up to a couple of inches. I reached the site by paths from the car park on the minor road to the northwest; my walk included a stretch on the Ackling Dyke Roman Road. Numerous tumuli were seen en route, there are a couple of long barrows and earthworks of an ancient settlement near the pillar on the hill top. The settlement earthworks are overgrown and difficult to define and the route of the nearby Dorset Cursus could not be discerned. The view from the pillar is mainly to the north and west across gently undulating downland with a patchwork of large fields and woodland towards the higher ridges at the edge of Cranborne Chase.
