I called here on the final 3rd of my 11 mile hike which took in Rivington Pike, Winter Hill and the Wellington Bomber Memorial. As previously stated, a lovely location. Such a pity that the trig is no longer there.

Gone. Destroyed September 1979. GR places the location where the bushes in my photograph are. There is a cairn nearby, but the location of the cairn is not at the location where the pillar once was. The pillar was much further south

There is no trace of any trigpoint now at the grid ref given which is not suprising if it was destroyed over 40 years ago (according to OS). There is however the remnants of a concrete post a few meters away at a slightly different GR

Would have been somewhere around here, just off the hill summit TP7413©jonglew

Thanks to Rod Sladen for transcribing this from the OS records. It is described on www.benchmarks.org.uk/bm20909 as "S3474 [SD30/T40] pillar replaced by surface block". The OS benchmark site states that the block was destroyed 09/79 and gives a location SE from the summit. OS One-Inch Sheet 101 (2nd edition), 1951 shows a triangulation station at or near the hilltop. Nothing there now but a cairn. Numerous paths. Views of Rivington/Winter Hill and across Chorley.
