By Heather for HCU3A, Took the boat from St Mary's to St Martins. St Martin's is the third largest island of the Scilly's, it's famous for having the clearest seas in the British Isles. The tranquil waters and sandy beaches are simply stunning. We walked around the island from the quay, across the heather covered downs to the Daymark. The Daymark has stood at the head of St Martin's since 1683 - it's the oldest surviving daymark in the country.

Extensive views S, W & E; N obscured by the day mark, which has a cut benchmark to RHD side of bricked-up doorway. ***Re-visited 4 Jul 2022.

Visited on a trip to St Martin's to walk round the coast. The trig point (the only classic pillar on Scilly) is located near to the great red and white day mark on St Martin's Head, surrounded by heather moorland. Very easy to find. The trig point is in reasonable condition, showing traces of white paint, but the cap is missing. A lable declares that the trig is part of the OS National GPS Network. The English coast is visible from the trig point on a good day, as far as St Michael's Mount. The walk along the north coast of St Martin's is the best in Scilly.

Seems I'm following Simply PAul around: St Kilda, now this! vgc, no cap or plug, immediately S of lighthouse; fine view. Nice scenic island; standard return fare from St Marys is about £8; you could probably just about bag it via a cheap daytrip from Penzance on the Scillonian (£35 I think). We were on Scilly for a long weekend, mainly botanising - there are some celebrated rarities; we found Orange Birdsfoot in several places on Martins. It was also Pilot-gig World Champs (rowing) that weekend, so a good atmosphere. Brilliant, 10/10.

Cracking spot 41km from the next trig, making it the UK's second most remote- I think. I visited the most remote the year before, on St Kilda. Great views to the Eastern Isles and the daymark.
