I feel an affinity for this transmitter, broadcasting to the region as it does the programme I work on! Indeed it's the transmitter I receive my television signals on at home, exactly 43 miles to the NE. Parked up at the roadside of the A39 and walked up the hill to the transmitter compound, visiting the nearby trigpoint at the same time. Great views of the Somerset countryside! Photos to follow...

The trig is a lofty transmitting aerial on the crest of the Mendip Hills to the north of Wells. The mast is 305 metres tall, weighs 500 tonnes and was built in 1967; it is the tallest structure in the South West of England. A replacement antenna assembly is due to be installed in 2008 which will reduce the height to 293 metres. The transmitting station compound was passed on the way to the nearby trig pillar from the layby next to the gateway on the A39 to the east. Pen Hill affords good views; especially over the Somerset Levels to the south.
