Parked in Kirton Road. There's a big unfriendly sign saying KEEP OUT - PRIVATE PROPERTY on a locked gate which blocks entrance to the field leading to the pillar. I'm a good boy really, so I did the right thing. I parked in Dauphine Close instead, where there is no such sign. In fact, it's marked as a footpath, which makes the Kirton Road notice somewhat nonsensical! Followed the route so kindly photographed by Kelvin Hill on Google Streetview almost all the way to the pillar, but rather than going up the rocky section at the end, I followed the path round where it snuck up on the pillar from behind - much easier! Slightly weatherbeaten trig with remnants of graffiti, but otherwise in good condition, standing proud on a rocky plinth overlooking what won't remain the county top much longer if they keep digging it up! Excellent views, a substantial but unchallenging walk, and a primary trig lacking an S-prefix (I haven't found many of those). Nothing to not love - 10/10.

Parked on housing estate to north of Bardon Hill, south of Agar Nook. Headed south on footpath Ivanhoe Way. Need to investigate to find out what the connection is. Through woodland, tried to keep to the path although went off the trail slightly. At one point reached a path running south immediately to west of a quarry. Fenced off fortunately as west was the direction I felt I should be heading. Could see the pillar in the distance across the chasm. Continued south and uphill, as ground levelled out came to a tarmac track coming up from the east. Wondered if this would have been accessible as it would have saved quite a long walk. Turned west past a boarded up shelter on north of track then radio masts to south of track. Path became uneven and rocky. Emerging at the exposed west end of the path overlooking the quarry which was in operation at the time. Quite a sight. Good views to west, south and north. Spider and concrete cap in place. Unusual no S prefix. Information board nearby. Noted as Leicestershire county top after reading other logs.

(2270) Tackled this one from the PRoW (in places it has either been temporarily or permanently changed) on Warren Hills Road next to Upper Greenfield Farm. Which sports a pull-in for 3 or 4 cars. A steady and enjoyable 25 minute walk brought me to the pillar - I didn't see another soul going, and only one mountain biker when I was nearly back at my car. And despite being next to the quarry at the summit, I couldn't see a thing thanks to the mist. Residing on the top of a stone plinth, the pillar has some minor damage to the top, and the missing centre cap has been filled in. Overall the pillar is in reasonable condition. An enjoyable one to visit all told. Pillar history: Built on the 1st of March 1936, at a cost of £6 4s 4d. Last maintained by the OS in April of 1993.

My copy of Cicerone's "The County Tops of the UK" sits in a pile of guide books mentally logged as 'Stuff to get around to one day', however Bardon Hill is a very short detour off the M1 and Leicestershire is my county of birth...helped perhaps by the fact the weather was stunning today, but this is a fantastic viewpoint. For a hill that is remarkably less than 300m the views suggest it is substantially higher! Its a good walk to get to it too, I could happily return to this one again.

Walked up from the housing estate to the north, on the Ivanhoe Trail. Once into the woodland you turn left and follow a wide path to a metal 5 bar gate on the right. Turn right, go passed the gate and walk steadily up hill. You can catch sight of the trig pillar half way up through the hedge. Carry on through a kissing gate and follow the path to the communication masts. Pass to the right of the masts following a narrow path, initially downhill to a short climb steeply up to the pillar located on a concrete and stone base. Immediately to the right & left is the impressively deep Bardon Quarry. More spectacular than that is the view to the west. The high tops of the West Midlands can be seen if clear enough. Clent Hills, Turner's Hill, Barr Beacon, Cannock Chase and beyond possibly Brown Clee Hill and the Long Mynd in Shropshire. Views east and south are limited by vegetation. It may not be high but Bardon Hill is the County Top for Leicestershire and it commands excellent views west and north. Probably the highest point eastwards to the Urals. Stratigraphers will be interested in the buried landscape of the Pre-Cambrian volcanic (the quarried rock) covered unconformably by dark red Triassic sediments in the east facing western quarry face.

People complain about the adjacent huge hole. There's been a quarry here for 100+ years, and we all want to drive on metalled roads and live in built houses (rather than caves). This and the other neighbouring quarries are the last really good quality hardstone aggregates as you head south on the eastern side of the country - there's a huge demand for it. What should we do instead - blow entire Scottish islands to bits, and ship them round the coast? Lecture over!
