(2796) Pillar seen from several locations today. Called in for this one as fledgling crop was in the field. Friendly chap gave permission and pointed me in the right direction. Pillar all good and sporting all its metal work. Pillar history: Built on the 4th of September 1947, at a cost of £5 16s 6d. Last maintained by the OS in August of 1985.

Arrived Darton via 06.56 LNER Skipton to London Kings Cross 08.32 Leeds to Sheffield trains. A cracking walk in excellent weather, up from gate to the South along field edge then walking side ways on to pillar from the West stepping between old crop & new crop.

Stands in the middle of a ploughed field with good views of the surrounding area. The pillar is in generally good condition and retains the original centre for the spider.

Earth shadowed by the fast moving wintry clouds, an exciting spot - the M1 and industry jumbled in with beautiful rolling countryside and suburbia mixing with old farms and factories. Off for a walk near Silkstone and then YSP afterwards.

Parked in layby on the B6428 and over the locked barrier. Warnings regarding farm thefts very prominent. Head in a Soth westerly direction and under the power lines. Field had crop in today but with care the pillar was reached.

visited this one expecting it to be toppled but thankfully it's still there with stones still on top.walked down the road to the bottom and double backed going over 2 fences and a 3rd near the trig to make the final short ascent.can be seen from all around and is very exposed.

Second time lucky. First time was in May, 2011, and the trig was invisible because chest high oilseed. Today with a spare couple of hours drove up on a wet and windy afternoon, parked in lay by at 311 085, climbed through the gate ignoring police warning notices about poachers, followed the fence line SW and got to the trig under the power line on the brow of the hill. The pile of stones has been put back since painterman61, not bad. Quite good views all round.

Parked on Higham Common Rd just South of the primary school for short walk North to crossroads then west along A635. Pillar was readily visible immediately after leaving the village. Entered field via gate about 100m or so after last house. Followed western boundary of field up the hill until directly opposite pillar before striking straight across to it (crop had been cut - just stubble remaining). Pillar in good condition with four stones crowning it so don't know if cap present or not.

6th of day. Chosen my visit well as it is now a walk over stubble to the pillar on a prominent knoll in the middle of the field. Capped by a large slab of rock. Clear views on a pleasant sunny day.Spoilt by roar of traffic on nearby M1.

Approached via hedgeline to south west. You're overlooked at the trig but only by council houses. Still a bit of white paint. Plug with indented lettering.

Very prominant from all directions, bare in mind it's a trespass and that you will be too (prominant, that is) if you hang about the trig for too long. Gate directly south gives easy access but walk the field perimiter to the nearest point to the trig.

You can see the trigpoint from the A635, just before it passes under the M1 Motorway. You can also see it from the Motorway. However, without permission, you can't get to the pillar.
