This is what summer evenings were made for. Parked in Barbon and followed the route described previously by Mark up to Castle Knott and onto the summit of Calf Top. The bog between the two points had dried up and the views all round were stunning. Returned the same way to make it a 6.5 mile walk.

Drove down the lovely Bardondale road and parked up in the pub carpark. Followed the footpath around the start of the Hill Climb track then across the fields to Eskholme where we turned up the steepish Devil's Crag. Once above the cairn the path became less steep and it was a steady climb up to Castle Knot before dropping into the saddle and up again to Calf Top, where, upon reaching the summit, my wife and I completed the 25 Marilyns in the Yorkshire Dales and to mark the occasion, a spot of rain produced a great rainbow Simply retraced our route back to the Barbon Inn where an excellent pint of Landlord was to be found (in exchange for £5.30!)

A recent addition to the Nuttalls list and just by the skin of its teeth (609m). Came from lovely Barbon village via Eskholme and Castle Knott before dropping down to Occupation Road and onto Great Coum, Gragareth and Bull Pot Farm. A fine 18 mile walk. This pillar and Gragareth are given to the pure breeds still out there. The rise in demand for "poo" dogs have pushed many breeds into vulnerability status, including my little Lakie.

Calf Top was reclassified from a 'Dewey' to a Mountain (Hewitt) and 'Nuttall' in September 2016. Formerly thought to be fractionally under the 609.6m (2000ft) required for mountain status, the Ordnance Survey recalculated the height of the mountain using the OSTN15/OSGM15 transformation to a height of 609.606m (2000ft and 1/4 inch)..Can't be many 4 year old Mountains around!!

I visited it as part of my plan to visit all trig points in the YDNP - but I'm now not sure that it is in the National Park. It is to the west of the wall running along the ridge that forms the western boundary of the National Park so it could well be outside by a matter of 2 feet! In view of the energy expended to reach it as far as I am concerned it is still in the National Park. As to whether it is a 2,000 ft hill, and thence a mountain, I couldn't care a monkeys! All I know is that it is a hard slog up from Barbon, albeit on an excellent 'quad track'.

Plug missing. Rain slowly clearing. 1999 ft above sea-level plus slightly higher ground on the eastern side of the (broken) wall plus the tide was out in Morecambe Bay 8-) Long but easy ascent, short but difficult descent. The flush bracket faces away from the high point and the wall intervenes. But taking the FB as the reference, the height of the top surface of the pillar could be established. Then, sighting across the wall to a measuring stick placed on the summit, the corresponding level could be measured and hence down to the height at ground level. But my guess is that its just short of 2000'.

Highest point of Middleton Fell. The trig base is surveyed at 1999' and there is higher ground on the Yorkshire side of the wall. For this reason a lot of us consider this to be a genuine 2000' hill. Not that it matters, a great walk anyway

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed in July 1949 costing £20.18s.3d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station SD47/9 in the Barrow-in-Furness block. Flush bracket S5670 was levelled for height also in 1950. this trig point was last maintained by the OS in June 1976. This top has been the subject of numerous RHB discussions disputing the exact height value of the summit.
