Parked at the end of the public road in Cowpe and walked up t0oHailstone Ridge trig pillar first. Crossed over the Marilyn hill towards Cowpe Lowe. A great walk of around 6 miles but be aware that the footpaths around Cowpe that are marked on the map are not all marked on the ground.

Parked on Cowpe Road and then followed the footpath through farm (very messy), struggled to follow footpath from here and it was getting very hot and I was getting very bothered! Eventually found our way onto Rooley Moor Road and then followed this bagging a few benchmarks on the way. After Hailstorm Ridge we then followed the PBW over to Cowpe Lowe via a couple of other benchmarks.

From the picnic site NE of pillar at SD83392 21399, then onto Hail Storm Hill and across to the pillar at 'Top of Leach'. Pillar in good nick, plastic cap with 'Rossendale Round' sticker on it, all sight holes open. Not bad views, if you like wind farms.

Revisit whilst on Trig and BM round in the area,off down to the Duke of Buccleuch at Waterfoot for a well earned pint before the 16.20 464 bus to Rawtenstall to start my journey home. My journey today started out on the 06.45 M1 bus from Earby to Burnley to board the 07.45 X43 to Rawtenstall & the 08.20 464 Rochdale bus to Stubbylee Park to start my walk. All on a £6.80 Lancashire Day ticket another bargain day out.

HISTORY: Pillar built in May 1948 costing £11.15s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE02/T8 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in October 1979. SITE VISIT: Approached from northeast. Free car park at picnic site with tearoom up cobbled lane, SD833214. Note, car park gets locked at night once all the cars have gone - lady lives within sight. Direct route southwest up steep lane until on open hilltop. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre contains a grey plastic cap, fitted 18/06/2000 by JWR. Flush bracket faces SW, ~231°. All four sight holes open, innards filled with debris. Full 360° panoramic view.

Plastic plug. Graffiti not noticed at pillar, but shows up on photos. Public. Access Land. Easy walking on the Pennine Bridleway above Cowpe Reservoir. Cowpe Lowe dominates the way ahead, with the pillar clearly visible. The wide, flat & grassy summit is easily attained. Can also be reached by Gin Croft Lane & Sandy Beds Lane from Edenfield.

12 mile circular trigbagging walk taking in Hunger Hill, Knowl Hill, Cowpe Lowe and Top of Leach (Hailstorm Ridge) trigs. Until we got here we didn't realise the moor had got a horrible wind farm built all over it!
