Walked from the Deer Centre with Elaine. Lots of Pheasants and Yellowhammers. We got to go to the top of the monument because some Polish people had got the key. Great views from the top but was very glad of the torch! Not an attractive monument but a good walk.

This was the 2nd of 4 Fife Marilyns and trig points I would visit today and not the best! Initially looked at parking near Fernie and heading up from NO320150 but there was nowhere suitable. There was a car already at the main starting place NO339159 but I was able to tuck my van in behind a tree, just before a slight bend at NO337157. The walk is straightforward along signed tracks. A deer fence encloses the summit, monument and pillar but there is a gate at NO330165. Due to tree cover, views from the summit were minimal. The monument dwarfs the TP. It (the monument) was locked but rather spookily I could hear noises from inside. TP slightly eroded at the top. Cap open

There was a storm brewing again (Storm Gertrude apparently - who chooses these names?). Not sure whether I was running before it, but suddenly I seemed to be within its vortex. What a buffeting. Pillar seemed unfazed though: open cap & one sight-hole open. Back down the slippery hill definitely in the eye of the storm, for a right soaking.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 12th June 1948 costing £6.15s.0d. Later in 1948 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station NO42/11 in the Dundee block. The flush bracket was levelled for height in 1967. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in June 1986. Neighbouring monument is inscribed with: "To perpetuate the memory of John 4th Earl of Hopetoun who died 16 August 1823, this memorial is erected by the inhabitants of Fife MDCCCXXVI". (1826).
