Parked on Meadow Rise. After walking down Unicorn Road, took the path from Queen Elizabeth Drive up to the summit of Shelf Bank and the pillar. There is some minor damage to the top and the cap is missing from the spider. This pillar was built by the Royal Engineers in the mid 1940's. They would place their regimental crest on to the pillar. However, whilst the pillar has a recess to hold a crest, the crest either was not installed or has been lost. Wynnstay Hall near Ruabon, Wrexham, was used as a training establishment for the Royal Engineers Survey Cadre, and as part of their training during the 1943-47 period, the trainees were tasked with building some of the secondary and third order pillars. 8 pillars have the crest. This pillar is 1 of 6 pillars which have the recess, but no crest.

A westward pedal saw me at a nice garden centre tea room at Ellerdine for lunch, and perusing the map, I decided a visit here was possible, before a more SE ride to near Bishop's Castle. Found unsigned footpath from South at end of Elgar Drive. Gravelled path took me directly to pillar. Could have continued down to North or to SW. In a bit of scrag land on a sharp hill in the middle of Oswestry. The most prominant local landmark is a "scarey house" currently for sale. Pure Bates Motel/Creepy Coupe gothic. The plug is missing, and there is some frost damage to the top, but not a lot. The hooks ahve also been flattened. This pillar has a plaque recess, pointing towards Mynydd Myfyr.

my home town trig, the first i ever saw. interesting area. used to be air raid shelters at base of hill by disused / ripped up railway sidings. top of hill is/was hollow - a squarish concrete structure nearby was infilled with concrete some 20yr ago - before this a ladder took you 30 ft inside the hill.
