Locke Park & the tower are sadly like most of our municipal parks and buildings, they are a shadow of former times. Today was different though. The local community came out to take part in and support the annual Cancer Research UK Race For Life. The Barnsley Rock Choir inclusive of my wife came out to support the event against the back drop of the tower. It is for those reasons that I elevated my score to ten. Once a month, usually the first Sunday, the friends of Locke Parke open the tower to the public. Today was that day and I took full advantage of the opportunity. The weather vane is no longer on the tower but I was reliably informed that it is in safe storage. The tower affords panoramic views of the city and beyond. The trig points of Emley Moor and Cannon Hall were easily spotted.

The tower is the highest point in Barnsley and set in a very attractive, undulating park. Read reports that the tower is to be restored so the scaffolding may be a hopeful sign. (It's closed to the public for safety reasons, so had to call it 'slightly damaged'.)
